PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR GARDEN TO ADVANTAGE

For the contest, attach up to 6 electronic (.jpg) photos of your garden to your entry form and email them to us. Here are six quick tips to help you show your garden at its best. (Click on any photo, below to enlarge it, if you wish.)

1. Photographs in the morning or afternoon (right hand side) are usually richer than those taken in flat, midday light (left hand side).
2. Watch out for intrusive objects (like the light in the left picture) or intrusive backgrounds.
3. Try to show your garden in context of house or surroundings in at least one photo.
4. Vary your focus, if you have an adjustable camera. To get more in focus (left hand side), use wide-angle lens and small aperture (like f11 or f16). For selective focus, use telephoto and large aperture (like f2.8 or f3.5).
5. Flowers are colorful and great, but get some of your actual garden in, too, for context.

6. Vary your perspective—broader views or close shots—maybe even some from high or low viewpoint instead of all from eye level.

Just remember, there's no way to do this wrong, so feel free to ignore these hints. Send pictures of whatever you think shows off your garden best, and have fun making them.
